چکیده

We approach the hidden subgroup problem by performing the so-called pretty good measurement on hidden subgroup states. For various groups that can be expressed as the semidirect product of an abelian group and a cyclic group, we show that the pretty good measurement is optimal and that its probability of success and unitary implementation are closely related to an average-case algebraic problem. By solving this problem, we find efficient quantum algorithms for a number of nonabelian hidden subgroup problems, including some for which no efficient algorithm was previously known: certain metacyclic groups as well as all groups of the form Z p ⋊ Zp for fixed r (including the Heisenberg group, r = 2). In particular, our results show that entangled measurements across multiple copies of hidden subgroup states can be useful for efficiently solving the nonabelian hsp.

The Hidden Subgroup Problem in Affine Groups: Basis Selection in Fourier Sampling

Abstract Some quantum algorithms, including Shor’s celebrated factoring and discrete log algorithms, proceed by reduction to a hidden subgroup problem, in which a subgroup H of a group G must be determined from a quantum state ψ uniformly supported on a left coset of H . These hidden subgroup problems are then solved by Fourier sampling: the quantum Fourier transform of ψ is computed and measur...

Solving systems of diagonal polynomial equations over finite fields

We present an algorithm to solve a system of diagonal polynomial equations over finite fields when the number of variables is greater than some fixed polynomial of the number of equations whose degree depends only on the degree of the polynomial equations. Our algorithm works in time polynomial in the number of equations and the logarithm of the size of the field, whenever the degree of the pol...

Hidden Subgroup Quantum Algorithms for a Class of Semi-Direct Product Groups

A quantum algorithm for the Hidden Subgroup Problem over the group Z/pZ o Z/qZ is presented. This algorithm, which for certain parameters of the group qualifies as ‘efficient’, generalizes prior work on related semi-direct product groups. 1998 ACM Subject Classification F.1.2 Modes of Computation, F.2.2 Nonnumerical Algorithms and Problems

Efficient Quantum Algorithms for the Hidden Subgroup Problem over a Class of Semi-direct Product Groups

In this paper, we consider the hidden subgroup problem (HSP) over the class of semi-direct product groups Zpr ⋊ Zq, for p and q prime. We first present a classification of these groups in five classes. Then, we describe a polynomial-time quantum algorithm solving the HSP over all the groups of one of these classes: the groups of the form Zpr ⋊ Zp, where p is an odd prime. Our algorithm works ev...

Optimal measurements for the dihedral hidden subgroup problem

We consider the dihedral hidden subgroup problem as the problem of distinguishing hidden subgroup states. We show that the optimal measurement for solving this problem is the so-called pretty good measurement. We then prove that the success probability of this measurement exhibits a sharp threshold as a function of the density ν = k/ log2N , where k is the number of copies of the hidden subgrou...
